I’m glad the wonderful Doree posted this because it has several valuable lessons for job seekers.

1. Employers often have unrealistic views about who will apply for a job. In this case, they’ve created almost impossible requirements. There is almost no one with over 5 years of experience editing a daily news site. Think about it. How many “daily news sites” were there five years ago? No one who has been continuously editing a daily news site since 2003 is going to apply for this job. They are certainly not going to take the job if it requires them to code HTML on their own. Do they think they can attract Matt Drudge?

2. Employers often have unrealistic views about what kind of skills are needed for a job. They want to hire someone who will cover news about high-paying careers. Why on earth is five years of editing experience needed for this? It’s not. Someone who has run a website for a couple of months could do this job.

3. You should ignore the requirements section of a want ad. Since they don’t need someone with this kind of experience and won’t really attract anyone with that kind of experience, you should feel confident that you can land this job even if you fall very, very short of what they say they want.

Wow, what a low opinion of men. The best we can do is guess the context of a TV show that men wrote and produced. Anyway, maybe “identify” is worse than “idolize”. I can see a case for the latter: dream job, good friends, hot romances, great fashion sense (actually that show is a fashion horror show, but I’ll put that aside). But to identify with Carrie is to be feckless, superficial, and snotty. These are not desirable qualities in people. To have this on repeat for 7-8 years is to show people who are not making an effort to act their best in the world but who give constant excuses for having attitudes and acting their worst.

It’s silly to get twisted about what is essentially a sitcom, but it boils down to one fact: Carrie Bradshaw is not a model for young women. She is a clown. Do any of you want to be clowns, too?
