I am saddened by what I’m seeing tonight on Tumblr. It seems that Mary Rambin mistakenly typed “Elizabeth” instead of “Prince” when writing a blog entry, and in doing so she ruined everyone else’s Internet. Some people started saying nasty things about her. It was not what you’d call, “all in good fun.” It was pretty awful.
I’m not happy that people feel the need to directly and clearly insult other people just to please their audience, or validate their own misanthropic world views. (and I’m not talking about: mild gripes about friends, inside jokes, playful teasing, sarcasm, or well-thought criticism. I’m talking about all-out “You’re a FUCKING RETARD” type comments) I’m just hoping that I see less of this in the upcoming days, because I know I’ve seen way too much of it over the past month. The bad habits are starting to spread, but I expect better of people in this community.
People with newfound popularity are starting to feel pretty emboldened to say nasty things about other people around here lately. Let’s hope people start feeling emboldened to be nicer to one another.
