as a web designer, i’ve found that one size does not fit all. i do not obviously charge all my clients the same price. i base it on what they can spend and how much work is involved. if it doesn’t make sense for me or the client, i send them to people i think might be able to work with them.

I do the same. Which is why, from a marketing perspective, putting the price like that right out on the front page is completely dumb. Besides, if they’re making it look like a website is just something you can order online like a book or a pair of sneakers, then they’re misleading their customers. Or deluding themselves.

Somewhat worse than these guys are the people who advertise their website design services “for only $99”. Those are nearly scams - either that’s a “starting at” price where you’re spending way more than that in the end to get something half-decent, or you’re getting what you’re paying for, a cheap piece of shit.
