So most of you know that my love of hip-hop runs deep. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt inspired and obsessed with a hip-hop artist. Most people that fall within my age bracket yearn for the days of old - the boo-bap era - De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Wu-tang, Brand Nubian, Big L & Gangstarr, Pharcycde, Dilated Peoples, Talib Kwali, Mos Def and Common.
But I’m here to tell you - this 17-year old kid from Brooklyn is no f*ing joke. Since the original Pro Era video dropped (“Survival Tactics”), he’s gotten a ton of press. His mixtape, 1999, fell in at number 8 of the 50 best albums of 2012 by Complex Magazine and it dropped less than a month ago! I’ve been listening to this kid for a few months now and am certifiably obsessed. He’s reminiscent of Big L, conscious hip-hop, and a sound of years past. His flow is much more sophisticated than his age and his style is refreshing in a music genre that has been seriously lacking for a long time.
But don’t take my word for it - cop the mixtape here.
Holy crap. She’s right.
